A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.
Thyroid glands are located in our throat and regulate hormonal activities of the body. Lately there has been increase in the detection of thyroid problem. There are two types of thyroids: Hypothyroid and hyperthyroid. The symptoms of hypothyroidism are sometimes distinct while sometimes they resemble depression. But even then if you want to find out whether you are suffering from hypothyroidism some signs given in detail here can guide you properly in this direction.
- Some of the very basic symptoms of hypothyroidism are hoarse voice, slow pulse rate, slowing of speech, constipation, weight gain, puffy face, loosing eyebrows, depression, dementia, coarse and dry hair, thickened skin, drooping eyelids, intolerance to cold, Carpal tunnel syndrome confusion and Dementia.
- Some other indirect symptoms of this condition are lowering of body temperature, forgetfulness, fatigue, sadness, inability to concentrate, problem in getting pregnant, low libido, high temper, uneasy feeling in throat and neck, and most importantly inability to shed extra weight even after trying hard with exercise and disciplined diet.
- It is not necessary that you would be suffering from all these symptoms. Rather there will be indication of some of the symptoms while some may not be at all there. But even then if couple of symptoms matches your physical features or problems then you might be suffering from hypothyroidism.
- The symptoms do not occur suddenly; rather they come slowly and gradually. Many times the symptoms are very mild and you do not get alarmed at all. Some of the most common tendencies like severe cramps during menstruation, shivering or feeling too much cold, too much yawning or fatigue are so general that you would certainly not connect it with hypothyroid. But together they can be identified as hypothyroid symptoms. The best way is to write down various symptoms related to your health condition so that when you go to the doctor he will be able to connect them properly. Individually the symptoms cannot guide the doctor.
- When your doctor thinks that you might be suffering from hypothyroidism he will ask you to go for blood test measuring TSH. Once confirmed he will prescribe you medications for a fortnight or even for a month and will again ask you to come back for check up. Many times the thyroid does not get detected in the first test, so if the symptoms are highly indicative towards hypothyroidism, the doctor again recommends the test after couple of weeks to confirm his diagnosis.
- Earlier guidelines diagnosed thyroid only when hypothyroidism was severe or high. Due to this many people who had hypothyroidism in minor amount were left unattended. But new guidelines diagnose hypothyroidism in a minute and subtle way due to which even minor thyroid is nowadays traced and treated. So in the past if you tested negative for the thyroid test then now you can go for the test again.
Now, it’s your time to check whether you are having hypothyroid or not. Start by writing down the symptoms related to your health and compare them with those mentioned here. If some of them do match, then its time to go to doctor for diagnosis!
